Family Counseling
Each family has their own problems and their own way of communication. But sometimes, the problems can get out of hand and they can’t communicate anymore. It’s a completely normal thing to happen. Most Families tend to go to a family counselor to work out their problem.
Family Counseling which is also called systemic therapy focuses on helping the individuals, couples or families resolve their conflicts, develop their communication skills and go through their problems. It focuses on the relationships and helps to make the family stronger and happier.
2 Things to Consider when looking for family counseling services
1. Ask Around
If you have friends or family members who attend family counseling services, don’t be afraid to ask them about family counseling. There are a lot of therapists and family counselors out there; sometimes you don’t know who the best or the worst in that field is. So ask your friends and family members about their counselor. Is the counselor competent enough? Have you seen any development with them? What do they like about their therapist?
2. Qualifications
Once you have found a family counselor, call them and ask them about their educations background, the results they have had with their patients and whether or not they worked with other people who had the same issues as you? If they have, how did it turn out? Additionally, ask if they are licensed by relevant agencies as this will go a long way in boosting their credibility.
3 benefits of going to a family counselor:
1. Helps you through your issue
The job of a family counselor is to help you and your family throughout your conflicts and strengthen your bond and communication. The counselor can teach you so many ways to express your feelings and thoughts to other people, learn how to communicate, deliver your ideas and most importantly listen to what the other people have to say.
2. Understand
When you end up going to a family therapist because of a family problem, death, addiction or divorce, the therapist will help you understand your situation more. They will shed light on your problems and put a hand on the wound. Once you understand what you are going through, it will be easier for you to deal with your issue and easier for them to help you through it.
3. Support
One of the things that the counselor focuses on is giving support, whether it is by teaching your loved ones how to support you through your issue or simply through them supporting you to get better. So for example, if your son is going through addiction, he will first shed light on the acts and contributions from the family that makes the child act out and then focuses on the outside contributions. Once you get that out of the way, they will teach you and the rest of the family members how to support your son through his recovery journey.
